Team Descriptions

Family Support Team
Reports to the affiliate Board of Directors and is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the affiliate’s support program. The committee specifically works with families through:

Sweat equity
Homeownership education
The closing process
Adjustment to new responsibilities
Continued partnership

Family Selection Team
Responsible for drafting the selection criteria used to select families for approval by the board of directors. The committee is also responsible for:

Informing prospective homeowners that they may be eligible to apply
Developing an orientation program for applicants
Developing application forms
Screening applications
Interviewing prospective partner families
Recommending applicants to board of directors for approval

Once an application has been approved as a prospective homeowner, the committee works in conjunction with the Family Support Committee to continue the relationship building process.

Construction Team
Works with Site Selection to evaluate potential sites, creates workable house plans, develops systems and schedules for organizing families and volunteers for construction, and establishes contacts in the professional community. The opportunities offered to the community to participate in the construction process are vital to the continued growth of the affiliate. Volunteer participation, recognition and encouragement; spreads the good news of Habitat throughout the community and sustains the health and growth of the affiliate.

The Construction Committees are responsible for:

Construction coordination and schedules
Construction supervision
Material procurement
Safety

Church Relations Team
Seek to strengthen the support of the affiliate’s work by gaining volunteers, prayer, and financial resources from all community churches. The team will work in partnership with churches by extending the opportunity for members to engage in ministry by becoming involved with Habitat for Humanity.

Resource Development Committee
To work in partnership with the Board of Directors to ensure that the fiscal needs of the affiliate are met and to share the opportunity throughout the community to participate in the ministry with cash and in-kind gifts.

The Resource Development Committee is also in charge of fundraising events, such as Taste of the High Country. The team should also:

Maintain records of where contacts have been made to avoid duplication of effort.

Seek a list of in-kind donations desired by the building committee and develop strategies to meet those needs.

Work with treasurer to ensure that processes are in place for donor recognition, IRS substantiation and categorized record keeping by source of income and donor.


Communications Team

Responsible for sharing Habitat’s mission with the people living in Watauga County, and all volunteers. The goal of the team is to continually seek to raise and maintain the community’s awareness of Habitat’s work in ways that properly reflect the mission, beliefs and image of Habitat for Humanity International.

Sharing the mission includes educating and informing the public of Habitat principles, policies, and procedures in an accurate and responsible manner. Effective sharing of the Habitat mission with the entire community will raise public awareness and ultimately activate more people to be involved in some way, shape or form in the elimination of poverty housing from the face of the earth. It should also assist in addition a leveraging of local resources to address local challenge.

Site Selection Team

To target the area of the community in which the ministry of Habitat will develop and work. Ideally, this would be done in an area in which property is readily available at a reasonable cost. Once an area is targeted, it is the committee’s responsibility to identify and recommend property for acquisition to the Board. The team then follows through with the acquisition process.

Land Development
This committee has formed to administer the development process of the recently purchased 20 acres in Green Valley. Coordinating the surveying, enginering, timbering, road cutting, and utilities are the main responsibilities of this committee.

Long-Range Planning
Develops and continually reviews a three-year plan. The team works to implement, plan and forecast new initiatives, and identify future opportunities and risks for the affiliate.

ASU Habitat Chapter
The Appalachian State University Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is a group of students working in partnership with the Watauga County affiliate to further Habitat’s mission. View their page.

Covenant Churches
Habitat for Humanity serves to demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. It is natural that the church should be a primary partner in Habitat’s work. Establishing a relationship with local churches can help Watauga County’s Habitat for Humanity.

Expand volunteer network.

Build a prayer network for the ministry of Habitat.

Maintain your focus in living out the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Secure successful, long-term and reliable funding partners.

Select building sites, target communities for building and build relationships within those communities.

Identify potential homeowners.

Strengthen your family selection and partnering efforts.

Educate the community about the need for simple, decent, healthy housing.

Pledge of monetary support for Habitat, with either monthly, semi-annual or annual payments.

Watauga County Habitat for Humanity is empowered when the community of faith prays for Habitat and when congregations join Habitat as covenant churches in discipleship and service.
