Building foundations & futures

In the spring of 2011, we broke ground on the first of 20 homes that will be built in our new GreenWood neighborhood. Now with nearly three years under our belts and with the first two families moved in to their new energy-efficient homes, we are proving that sustainable housing can and should be beautiful and affordable for all. Join us as we build out the rest of this 20 home model neighborhood of sustainable, integrated community design. GreenWood is an example of what’s possible in the green building industry, beautifully demonstrating that efficient, ecological building practices can ensure lasting affordability for our hardworking partner families. Through numerous community meetings, design charrettes and homeowner input sessions, we have honed our plans for the site and its structures, creating an inviting community that sits lightly on the land.

Why Go Green?
We believe that we have a responsibility to our community and to our partner families to build houses that are eco-friendly, sustainable and that demonstrate sincere stewardship for our natural resources.  When we realized that we would be able to purchase the 20 acre tract of land, the site of our GreenWood neighborhood we worked closely with myriad community partners to ensure that GreenWood could be looked at as a model sustainable neighborhood that is part of a growing number of progressive and innovative community building projects within Habitat for Humanity. These projects are impressive models of sustainable community development that have the potential to greatly benefit families economically and socially.

GreenWood homes are built well beyond typical code standards, and offer a super-insulated design that drastically reduce the demand on heating and cooling systems, thereby conserving vital energy resources. These energy enhancements should save a family between $200 and $300 per month in utility bills when compared to a conventional home of the same size and $100,000 over the course of the 30-year mortgage.

Directions to the jobsite: Turn left onto HWY 194 from US HWY 421 South at the Hardees red light at New Market Center. Travel approximately 5.5 miles down HWY 194. Turn Right onto Big Hill ROad which is the driveway to Green Valley Elementary School. Just before you enter the school’s parking lot, turn left onto the dirt road adjacent to Bill Hill Road. Follow the road as it curves back up the hill and take your first immediate left. Go to the end and you will see the worksite!
